Photoshop CS3, extended ?

For years, Adobe has heard the pleas of researchers, scientists, and other highly specialized users of Photoshop to include features that fulfill their
needs. Finally, Adobe has been able to provide the tools these specialists need. But rather than just adding them into Photoshop CS3 and making
everyone pay the costs for developing these features that few will use, Adobe packaged them as a separate, higher-priced version of the software.
“Let those who need the new features subsidize their costs!” was the decision And, in my opinion, it was a fine decision. As I explain, these extended
features don’t really have a place in the workflow of most Photoshop users. That doesn’t mean that if you do have Photoshop CS3 Extended that you’ll never use any of these features!(“How do I know which version I have?” Watch as Photoshop starts to see which splash screen appears.

Even if you didn’t specifically purchase the Extended version (it might have been part of a package deal), you might someday decide to
work with 32-bit, high dynamic range images. Or you might find a need to calculate a height or a distance using the measuring tools in Vanishing
Point. But unless you actually work directly in one of the target fields for the features of Photoshop CS3 Extended, you’re not likely to miss the additional capabilities at all. Another clue that you’re working in Photoshop CS3 Extended is that you can see the Analysis menu, which holds commands related to working with the new measuring capabilities
A detailed list of ‘extended features is following :

High Compatibility Over large set of file types
Photoshop CS3 Extended can now import and manipulate 3-D objects, such as OBJ, 3DS, U3D (Acrobat 3D), KMZ (Google Earth), and COLLADA (XML files used most often for gaming) file formats. While these formats are all common and useful, the omission of DWG—the most popular format for exchanging CAD (computer-aided design) models—is glaring.
Photoshop Extended offers two ways to manipulate your view of the model: the Camera Tool and the Object Tool. The former gives the viewer a different perspective of the static object, while the latter actually moves the object. The Camera Tool allows you to move the “camera” that is viewing the model in 3-D perspective. You use this tool to fly around the object, walk through a scene, or view a scene from any direction relative to the object.

Enhanced Vanishing Point with 3-D

Vanishing point filter functionality has been enhanced in the Photoshop Extended. This filter was available in the photoshop standard version. Output result image after applying the vanishing filter can now be taken to a Photoshop layer or to a 3D model file.

Measurement tools and image analysis

Measurements taken on image files can now be tabulated using the new measurement log. The log can keep track of data such as width, height, area, units, scale, file name and so on. Same log can used to store data tables for multiple image files. Measurement data can also be exported to excel worksheets.

Video, animation, and painting

Importing video files to Photoshop extended is very easy. Add a layer and import the video movie into the same. Layer panel will indicate this layer as a video layer. Importing is very quick too. For example a 8 minute Quicktime movie will take only a few seconds to load. Animation (timeline) palette then can be used to control the frame being worked on. on destructive adjustment layers can be applied to multiple frames. Graphic layers too can be added to some or all the frames.

Medical imaging

Imaging files in DICOM (Digital Imaging and communication in Medicine) can be imported into Photoshop Extended. Multiple files of CAT scans, ultrasounds and MRI’s are included in one DICOM file. Once imported these can be treated as any other imaging files and the editing tools of Photoshop Extended including the animation palette can be used to edit annotate and animate the file. The resulting file can also be exported as a video file.

MATLAB support

Ability to import and export in MATLAB file format has been added in the Photoshop Extended. MATLAB provides interactive programming environment for algorithm development, data visualization, analysis and numeric computation. With this compatibility in Photoshop Extended, users can view results of algorithm developed in MATLAB from within Photoshop. Images created and/or edited in Photoshop can be exported back to MATLAB for further analysis.
